Reflections
on a Yearbook
by Bridget Mariano
As we comb through our files, books
and collections and continue with our cataloging those articles that
interest us or pertain to our own history or our family's history often
distract us. Old newspapers, city directories, unpublished histories
of Naugatuck all are bound to interest us and we stop our filing and
begin to read.
While sorting through the old Naugatuck High School Yearbooks we became
fascinated with the variety of names used from the 20's to the 50's.
Perhaps you will remember some of the names; the meanings of the names
take some research.
Now The Greyhound is the name of the Naugatuck High School Yearbook
and it has been that since the early 1950's. However in earlier years
students came up with many different names. Trends in education provided
some of the names, mythological and Latin names were popular in the
1930's and during the 1940's the student's thoughts turned toward the
war effort. Below there is a matching game that you might enjoy. Match
the yearbook name with its meaning. See the bottom
of the page for answers.
