The
Dana J. and Verna A Blackwell Award is a $500 award created
to honor Dana Blackwell, the Naugatuck Historical Society's first
president, and Verna Blackwell, a retired teacher from Hop Brook
School. Both have been active members of the Society since its founding
in 1959. Mr. Blackwell was Naugatuck's Historian Emeritus and Mrs.
Blackwell has served as a museum docent and historical researcher.·
Applicants
must be Naugatuck residents who are college or university students
entering their third or fourth full year of study and majoring in
History or Engineering. Completed applications and the required
documentation must be received by September
18, 2009. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applications
are available at the Naugatuck Historical Society Museum, 195 Water
Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770, by calling the Museum at (203) 729-9039
or a PDF version is available here.
The
Blackwell Award is funded by donations. If you would like to contribute
towards funding of this award, please send a check made out to

to Timothy Monahan of Naugatuck who is the 2008 winner
of the Dana J. and Verna A. Blackwell Award. Tim is a 3rd
year engineering student at Rochester Institute of Technology.

FIRST
BLACKWELL AWARD WINNER 2003 -- The first winner of the
Dana J. and Verna A Blackwell Award, given by the Naugatuck
Historical Society, is Miss Vanessa C. Wood, of Naugatuck.
Tom Jablonowski, 2003 President of the NHS, and Terry Swanson,
the Blackwell Award chairperson, presented Vanessa with the
award at the Society's meeting on May 21, 2003. Looking on
in the picture are Dana and Verna Blackwell.
Vanessa
is currently enrolled at Yale University, majoring in Engineering/Applied
Physics. Vanessa aspires to be a Research Engineer in the
field of Quantum Electronics. Currently, she is a student
researcher in the quantum electronics lab. As a result of
her superior academic abilities and commitment to engineering,
she is enrolled in the spring '03 graduate seminar course.
When she attended Taft School, she was a peer tutor, a gifted
soloist, and a runner and a swimmer.
